ATO credit card ban deferral

The Federal Government have announced a delay on the ATO’s credit card ban until June 2027, following advocacy from industry.

While welcome, Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn said this situation should never have arisen in the first place, criticising the complete lack of consultation.

“We still maintain that the ban must be scrapped. The delay also does not change the fact that such a significant decision was made without proper consultation with the businesses affected.

“Small building businesses were originally given just two months’ notice of a change with major implications for cash flow, tax compliance and business operations.

“In stark contrast, the Government gave businesses almost five years to prepare for the phase-out of cheques.

“We will continue to monitor this issue and urge the Government and its agencies to genuinely engage with affected businesses before making decisions that impact their viability.

“While the government will step in to fill the ATO’s funding gap, unfortunately small businesses do not have a white knight.

“The cumulative effect of recent policy decisions is making it harder, riskier and less attractive to run a small building business at the very time we need more of them delivering the homes, infrastructure and community facilities Australia relies upon,” said Ms Wawn.

“Small builders deserve better.”
