Laing O’Rouke wins Toyota National Civil/Infrastructure over $25m Award

Laing O’Rourke has been honoured with a prestigious national construction award for its work on the Perth Stadium at the National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards at the weekend.

Denita Wawn said the Toyota National Civil/Infrastructure Award over $25M, “recognised Laing O’Rourke’s excellence in engineering construction on a project that achieved its objective of enhancing the Perth Stadium precinct and the overall ‘event experience’ of visitors to Optus Stadium.”

The project, which required upgrading one of Perth’s oldest stations and rail lines, is integral to Perth Stadium’s integrated transport solution and the PTA’s Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) upgrade program. Its objective was to increase access and minimise traffic congestion and delays during event days at award-winning Optus Stadium.

To minimise the impact to rail passengers, East Perth Station remained operational during construction with Laing O’Rourke undertaking construction in two phases, requiring minimal station closures.

Works included an extension of Camfield Drive north from the Crown Towers entry to the southern edge of the Optus Stadium Bus Station and Stadium Park’s non-event day parking facility and construction of an east-west road from Camfield Drive to Victoria Park Drive.

“The outcome is the newest addition to the rail network, Perth Stadium Station, is integral to Optus Stadium’s transport solution,” Denita Wawn said.

“Laing O’Rourke’s delivery of the project included use of technology, including digital engagement which allowed the six platform Station to be safely delivered on time and with minimal impact. Capable of moving up to 28,000 people within an hour, the Stadium Station provides a high quality public transport service,” she said.

“Laing O’Rourke are deserving winners and their construction of this project show-cased are their commitment to providing high quality engineering construction, safe public infrastructure,” Denita Wawn said.
