A national Advanced Entry Trades Training program is exactly the kind of supply boosting measures needed to tackle the housing crisis says Master Builders Australia.
A re-elected Albanese Government has committed to invest $78 million to help 6,000 experienced but unqualified workers fast-track their trade qualifications.
This includes workers already in the industry who may not have gone through an apprenticeship or are skilled migrants already in Australia who have not had their skills recognised.
According to the Parkinson Review, it costs on average $10,000 and up to 18 months to have skills recognised.
The program will support workers to gain formal qualifications through recognition of prior learning and targeted training delivered by TAFEs and high-quality Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).
Attributable to Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn:
“It is well known that Australia is in the midst of a housing crisis. From social and community housing to rental properties and owner-occupiers, supply remains the greatest constraint.
“We need more skilled, qualified tradies on the ground to build the homes our communities desperately need.
“Our analysis shows for every new qualified tradie, an extra 2.4 homes can be built.
“This program fast-tracks that goal by helping experienced workers get the qualifications and recognition they deserve.
“The existing skills recognition process is often a barrier, especially for migrants already in Australia with the skills but no clear path to utilise them.
“The current system is cumbersome, costly, slow, and in some cases completely unnecessary.
“When seeking to attract more skilled trades into Australia, it’s crucial to also look at the talented individuals already here who are stuck in limbo because of an overly complex system. This funding will help remove those barriers.
“It’s great to see the program will be delivered not just through TAFEs but also high-quality RTOs across the country. These providers are essential to ensuring the training is flexible, fast, and accessible.”
