Master Builders Australia (MBA) reports that consistent with their interim report, the Productivity Commission (PC) continues its calls to reduce red tape and increase scrutiny of regulatory proposals noting that ‘the ever-growing burden of regulation puts a significant brake on productivity growth.’

MBA CEO, Denita Wawn said that the PC’s estimated regulatory cost burden on housing of $47.5 billion must be a wakeup call. In response to these findings, the PC recommends that the Government scrutinise regulation to ensure that its impact on growth and dynamism is more fully considered. The Commission calls out the National Construction Code (NCC) as a key example of the regulatory burden imposed on the building and construction industry.

“These recommendations come at a time when business, particularly small business in the building and construction industry are drowning in red tape and compliance burdens the likes of which has not been seen before.

“The announcement in October pausing and committing to streamline the NCC following our advocacy was a significant win for our industry and work has commenced on our response to the discussion paper issued last week.

“As we continue to call out, the growing volume of regulation imposed by all levels of government, including through the NCC, has contributed to poor construction productivity,” said Ms Wawn.

As a member of the Alliance of Industry Associations, MBA shares their calls for the Government to commit to a 25 per cent reduction in red tape.

“There is broad agreement across the economy that this situation requires a fundamental shift to the norms that drive the development of regulations and regulatory responses. To that end the PC is calling for a ‘change to the current architecture and culture’ of Australia’s regulatory system, a view Master Builders would strongly support.

“Setting a target to reduce red tape and having a clear agenda for regulatory reform and regulatory burden reduction as recommended by the PC is critical to supporting a sustainable and viable building and construction industry over the long term,” concluded Ms Wawn.
