Responding to the Federal Treasurer’s announcement to commence tripartite consultation to implement a national licensing scheme for electrical tradespeople has been welcomed by Master Builders Australia.
Master Builders has long called for a national licensing framework and automatic mutual recognition of licensed tradespeople to address a significant barrier to the mobility of trades in Australia.
The Productivity Commission recommended in their recent housing report that governments should continue to work towards consistency around occupational licensing.
Quotes attributable to Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn:
“The industry has been fraught with declining productivity and mounting red tape.
“Moves towards a national licensing scheme for electricians is a no-brainer and a good start towards improving workforce mobility in the building and construction industry.
“Skills shortages present one of the biggest challenges to tackling the housing crisis so measures to improve the movement of trades between states is critical.
“The need for licensed trade workers to obtain different accreditations for each state and territory is an excellent example of bureaucratic inefficiency.
“Master Builders looks forward to working with governments to ensure the successful implementation of the scheme and for it to be broadened across other licensed trades,” Ms Wawn concluded.
