Master Builders Australia’s analysis of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures released today reveal a flatline, with the economy only growing by 1.4 per cent in 2024-25.

CEO Denita Wawn explained that most concerningly productivity declined by 0.7 per cent, with construction productivity specifically dropping by 3 per cent (almost 7 per cent lower than its level five years ago).

Investment in dwellings across all building and construction sectors rose by 4.3 per cent, with a notable surge in public corporation dwellings (up 36.8 per cent).

Lines attributable to Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn:

“While there are some positives in the ABS data such as investment in dwellings rising, this shows a continued slowdown in economic growth from 2021-22, which should be a wakeup call.

“Every $1 million worth of building activity returns approximately $3 million in activity across the economy.

“We need to get the building and construction industry productivity headed in the right direction so we can deliver an average of 255,300 new homes per year over the next four years to meet National Housing Accord target.

“Master Builders Australia is confident builders are ready to deliver and has welcomed the commitments last month from the Commonwealth, state, and territory Treasurers to advance reforms that will boost productivity, streamline approvals, and support housing delivery.

“The commitments and the recent pausing and streamlining of the National Construction Code have demonstrated that the Government is listening, however, these reforms need to be fast tracked.

“These include speeding up approvals, streamlining regulation, advancing national licensing arrangements, and incentivising greater use of modern methods like prefabrication.

“Productivity in building and construction is not about cutting corners or doing more with less. It is about working smarter, eliminating waste, streamlining processes, and empowering the industry to deliver higher quality outcomes more efficiently and sustainably.”
