Master Builders Australia has applauded the implementation of the federal government’s pledges on new home building and workforce development showcased in today’s Mid-Year Economic & Fiscal Outlook.
“Under the First Home Supply Program, the federal government is aiming to generate 100,000 additional new homes exclusively for First Home Buyers. Today’s MYEFO report details how $10 billion in funding will be provided over the next eight years for this purpose in the form of both grants and concessional loans,” commented Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia.
“Delivering 1.2 million additional homes under the National Housing Accord by June 2029 is a massive challenge, particularly with us suffering a 60,000-home shortfall in the Accord’s first year. Initiatives like the First Home Supply Program enhance our chances of reaching the target,” added Denita Wawn.
“MYEFO also cements $78 million in resourcing for the Advanced Entry Trades Training Program, funding which will deepen the flow of new workers to our home building industry at a time of acute labour shortages. Because the Program will fast track the entry of qualified workers to the home building effort, it offers an opportunity to shorten delays in the delivery of new homes and keep a lid on cost pressures.
“Right now, our industry faces two key challenges. First is the requirement to meet the National Housing Accord target. The second hurdle surrounds productivity in our industry which has worsened by almost 20 per cent over the past decade.
“While MYEFO goes some distance in addressing these issues, we believe that budgetary resources can be used more ambitiously.
“Accordingly, we will be releasing our detailed set of proposals for the May 2026 federal budget in the new year which we look forward to discussing with government,” concluded Denita Wawn.
