Labor pledges more infrastructure work for smaller builders

Labor’s pledge to give mid-tier construction contractors better opportunities to work on publicly funded infrastructure reinforces its strong commitment to projects that meets the needs of our community.

“Today’s announcement by Anthony Albanese MP, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development that Labor will build on existing local procurement provisions in Federal Government infrastructure grants to state and territory governments is good news for local building and construction firms,” Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia said.

“Local mid-tier contractors often face barriers from tendering requirements which prevent them from realistically pursuing work on major infrastructure projects, including those being constructed in their community,” she said.

“Master Builders also welcome policies that will lead to more training and job opportunities for apprentices but will engage with Labor on the need for a contestable training system that provides students and employers with choices to access the most relevant training,” Denita Wawn said.

“However, Labor’s policy to scrap the ABCC will negate the benefits of this announcement. Without a strong regulator to stop the CFMMEU’s rampant coercion and intimidation, the community will once again pay far more than it should for its schools, roads and hospitals,” Denita Wawn said.
