Are you a builder working on a HAFF project?

Master Builders Australia is here to assist builders who are either involved in, or thinking about working on residential building projects to be delivered through the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF).

Support for builders

Master Builders Australia, in partnership with the Federal Government, is helping builders who are either involved in, or looking to engage in, projects funded by the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) that require accreditation under the Australian Government Building and Construction Work Health and Safety Accreditation Scheme as administered by the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC).

Subject to the value and class of the project you are looking to work on, the OFSC accreditation may be a mandatory requirement to be completed before you start working on the project.

But don’t worry, we are here to help you navigate the OFSC accreditation process by developing a range of FREE and bespoke services and tools.

Our tailored approach, combined with extensive industry experience, aims to assist you not only in preparing you to apply for accreditation but also improve your safety culture and potentially saving money through lower workers’ compensation premiums and reduced time lost to injuries.

This support is not limited to Master Builders members.

About the HAFF

The Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) and the National Housing Accord (Accord) are Australian Government initiatives to improve housing outcomes for Australians.

Through these programs, Housing Australia is working in partnership with all levels of government and the community housing, development and finance sectors to support the delivery of 20,000 new social and 20,000 new affordable homes across Australia over 5 years from 2024.

In March 2025, Housing Australia announced 29 projects which have been approved under round one of the HAFF and NHAF.

Through Round Two, Housing Australia is partnering with State and Territory Governments and the community housing sector to support the delivery of 5,001 social dwellings nationwide.

Community housing providers will play a critical role in delivering projects under funding round two of the HAFFF. For over 80 per cent of the selected projects, State and Territory governments have indicated their intention to deliver projects in partnership with community housing providers and other eligible entities.

How it works

Generally, applications to the HAFF are made by community housing provider (CHPs). If you are interested in accessing this funding, reach out to a CHP in your state or territory.

About OFSC Accreditation

The Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC) acts to improve workplace health and safety (WHS) practices on building and construction sites across Australia. This is done through the administration of the Australian Government Work Health and Safety Accreditation Scheme.

The WHS Accreditation Scheme is designed to improve health and safety in the building and construction industry.

In order to get accredited by the Federal Safety Commissioner (FSC), a builder must have a work health and safety management system in place that meets the FSC Audit Criteria and demonstrate that it is being implemented and followed on-site. As a result, accredited builders have higher quality safety systems and undergo regular FSC audits to ensure their compliance with the Scheme’s requirements. It also means that the FSC has certified the builder’s safety management system as meeting the requirements of the Scheme and as such, they can tender for Australian Government projects.

While the Scheme prescribes a range of criteria that accredited builders must meet, compliance with these requirements can be achieved through different approaches and processes depending on the type of works and projects the builder is the head contractor for.

Why should I get accredited?

  • Ensure you are eligible to undertake HAFF
  • Improve your company’s safety performance
  • Reduce potential costs through lower Workers’ Compensation Premiums and less time lost to absences and delays caused through workplace injury
  • Ability to tender for Commonwealth-funded building projects
