Construction training first launched in South West WA

An Australian first is being launched in Bunbury today.

A nation leading pilot project for the construction industry aimed at boosting skills and jobs for young people is being run in partnership with Master Builders and South Regional TAFE.

Funded by the Federal Government, the new pre-apprenticeship program delivers an introduction to building and construction that will help year 10, 11 and 12 students to determine if they want to pursue an apprenticeship in a building trade.

“The safe and sophisticated building and construction industry provides fantastic apprenticeship pathways to rewarding careers. This program provides students with real life insights into working in the industry and the skills that are required to succeed,” Dan Perkins, National President of Master Builders Australia said.

“It’s about giving young people the skills that they need and that employers in our industry want,” he said.

Not only are students gaining skills in carpentry, bricklaying and painting and decorating they are also being exposed to business management and skills and the experience of industry leaders running successful building and construction businesses.

South Regional TAFE Managing Director Duncan Anderson said the course was an exciting first for the region which will provide students with valuable industry relevant skills.

“Our top trades lecturers in carpentry, bricklaying, painting and decorating will train the students to very high standards,” Mr Anderson said.

“They will ensure the students receive varied but relevant experience which most importantly will give them a great opportunity to trial the type of work they will do in the industry.”

The 45 participating students have started training at the South Regional TAFE Bunbury Campus and attend two days per week, starting at 7.30am.

The students will complete a construction project building a mini amphitheatre at the Bunbury Campus. This will entail building a brick wall, preparation carpentry work as well as painting and decorating.

As part of the pilot project the students have been issued with protective clothing and will also learn about workplace safety and gain a White Card – mandatory for those working on a construction site.

Those students who complete the course will be able to prove to potential employers they are ready to start work in the industry as an apprentice.
