Builders: ALP’s first home buyers plan another important component of solving the housing crisis

Master Builders Australia applauds Labor’s targeted investment for first home buyers.

A re-elected Labor government will expand the First Home Guarantee Scheme and invest $10 billion for the construction of 100,000 new homes for first-homebuyers.

This builds on the established partnership with states through its planning reform blueprint and is now putting dollars behind this to incentivise a coordinated approach to delivering more homes.

CEO Denita Wawn said: “Helping more Australians into their own home isn’t just good housing policy – it’s good economic and social policy.

“Our industry is ready to deliver these homes, but rising costs, complex regulation, and a growing skills gap risk dragging down value for money.”

The announcement follows the release of Master Builders’ latest forecasts show Australia remains 160,000 homes short of the National Housing Accord target, underscoring the need for governments to take urgent, coordinated action to unlock the industry’s full potential.

“Supporting first home buyers is only meaningful if we’re also making it easier to build the homes they want to live in.

A key missing piece of the puzzle from the ALP’s combined housing plan is more skilled people.

“From apprentices on the tools to planners in council offices, workforce shortages are putting a handbrake on housing delivery.

“We need a coordinated workforce plan that includes investment in training, incentives for small business employers, and a dedicated construction pathway for skilled migrants,” Ms Wawn concluded.
