Inclusion of drug testing in building code a win for safety on building sites

Master Builders welcomes the Government’s decision to require drug and alcohol testing on construction sites.

“Master Builders strongly supports the move by Employment Minister Eric Abetz to include compulsory drug and alcohol testing policies in the Building Code,” Wilhelm Harnisch CEO of Master Builders said today.

“Safety on construction sites is paramount for the wellbeing or workers, contractors and the community and the prevalence of drugs including Ice on building sites poses unacceptable risks,” he said.

“Master Builders has consistently called for compulsory drug and alcohol testing to protect the health and wellbeing of all parties on building sites and their families,” Wilhelm Harnisch said.

“Contractors who are subject to the Building Code will have 28 days to ensure they have a compliant drug and alcohol testing policy in place. Compliance will be enforced by the independent construction industry regulator Fair Work Building and Construction ensuring that safety will be maximized with minimal unnecessary disruption to building sites,” Wilhelm Harnisch said.
